A small connection shift for grown-ups

Keep the wonder. Skip the quiz.

Stories give children wonderful things to notice—and give us an easy opportunity to connect. Instead of asking your child to prove what they know, invite them into the moment with a statement and a pause.

Instead of: “Where’s the rock?”
Try: “I see a rock.” Point to it and say, “Rock.” Then begin, “The rock is in the…” and pause for 3–5 seconds.

This gives your child a comfortable opening to join you. If they say “water,” enjoy the connection. If they don’t, simply finish the thought: “…water.” No correction and no pressure—just language shared together.

Help us make Washi and the Little Creek a no-quiz zone: a place to notice together, wonder aloud, and let conversation grow.
